And, just in time for the Christmas season, Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging (PSR), as part of its Santa for Seniors Project, is seeking to pack Christmas bags for more than 450 isolated, homebound older adults. The 2023 Share the Love Kick-Off Event was held in tandem with The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber After Hours, at 1413 S. Main Street in Farmville. The event included food, music, information about the event, and a peek at PSR’s Whoville-themed decorations in the office and on our patio. “For eight years now PSR has participated in this worthwhile cause that brings tears, smiles, and warmth to our older adult clients,” said Nutrition and Transportation Director Thomas Jordan Miles III. “PSR is proud to take part in The 2023 Subaru Share the Love Event, and our homebound, older adult clients will receive a large bag of staples for Christmas they can use,” Miles said. “We know and have been told that often, this is the only gift they may receive during the holiday season.” “This program has benefitted thousands of our homebound older adults,” said PSR CEO Justine Young, who had the concept for this event in the very beginning eight years ago. “This event has grown and flourished because community support. The grant funding we receive from this event funds multiple programs at PSR.” LetterPress Communications is the Title Sponsor of the event. Other sponsors include Weyerhaeuser, Riverstone Solar, Joe Hines for Virginia, The Fishin Pig, The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce, The North Street Press Club, FeedMore Inc., Pinos in Dillwyn, Walmart in Farmville, Dominion Energy, and Boyd Electrical. Others include WFLO and WVHL radio stations. In addition to monetary donations to purchase needed items for our older adults, PSR is in need of non-perishable food items, along with toiletries, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand towels, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, hand sanitizer, small containers of laundry detergent, soap, blankets, etc. They can be donated in person at 1413 S. Main Street, or online at https://www.psraaa.org/support-us.html. Just as PSR has done in years past, the donated items will be packed by staff and volunteers, and then delivered to home-bound and isolated seniors during the week before Christmas in December. The bags not only include necessities, but a hand-signed card from area children. As part of a national partnership with Meals on Wheels America, Subaru of America, Inc. and its retailers will donate a minimum of $300 to charity, like Meals on Wheels, for every new vehicle leased or sold from November 16, 2023, to January 2, 2024. Since the Subaru Share the Love Event began in 2008, Subaru and its participating retailers have donated more than 4.3 million meals and helped provide friendly visits to seniors being served by local Meals on Wheels programs across the country. Why does Subaru support Meals on Wheels? Too many seniors are struggling to stay independent and healthy. One in four seniors lives alone in isolation and one in seven seniors might not know from where their next meal is coming. This is simply unacceptable, which is why PSR provides the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to the seniors of counties of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward. This vital support keeps seniors in their own homes, where they want to be. We’re incredibly grateful to Subaru and its Retailers for supporting our organization and the seniors we serve. With that in mind, we thought you might want to learn a little bit more about the Subaru Share the Love Event. Farmville-based nonprofit brings together older adults across seven counties FARMVILLE, Va. (10/27/2023) – When Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging (PSR) Nutrition Program Coordinator Nikki Dean asked seniors in PSR’s weekly Friendship Cafes for suggestions for new activities, the answer was spontaneous: Older adults in the seven-county area served by PSR wanted to dance. “PSR’s Friendship Cafes are pretty spread out,” Dean explained. “Many of our clients wanted to meet people in other counties. I thought a dance would bring everybody together…I thought it would be a great way to showcase our Friendship Cafes to the public.” Weekly Friendship Cafes, held in the seven counties served by PSR, include a nutritious lunch, games, crafts and a time for socializing. In 2019, the first Senior Dance was held at the Farmville Moose Lodge, and the public was invited. “We shuttled people to the dance using our buses and brought in a DJ to play music from the 50s, 60s and 70s,” Dean explained. “Arlene Layden of Piggin Out Catering donated her time and gave us a discount on the food. Everyone had a great time!” Unfortunately, COVID arrived the following year. “We had to set aside plans for another dance for a few years,” Dean noted. As pandemic fears subsided in 2022, PSR’s older adults took to the Moose Lodge dance floor once again. “PSR is proud of the role we play in ensuring barriers to nutrition, transportation, and other social supports are removed for the older adult population,” said Nutrition and Transportation Director Thomas Jordan Miles III. “A key social determinant of health is socialization, and this event that Dean organizes directly addresses that for the betterment of our communities.” “This time we had a Senior Prom Dance complete with a prom king and queen,” Dean added. “Michael Reamer, my cousin and President of the Farmville Moose Lodge, was our DJ, and Piggin Out Catering provided the food and most of the decor.” The 2023 Senior Dance held on September 22 featured a country-western theme. “Everyone came decked out in cowboy boots and hats, and we added a photo booth with a printer so dancers could take a photo memory home,” Dean said. Dean noted the success of the dance project in attendance numbers that continue to climb as more older adults take to the dance floor. “For our first dance we had 70 attending; this year we had 110.” While dances are free, donation buckets are in place for anyone wishing to contribute. Dean explained that federal funding helps cover necessities such as food but not the “extras.” “The donations we receive go to fund those extra programs and activities,” she adds. Dean obviously enjoys implementing the extras that add a bit of bling to the lives of older adults in the community. “I love my job,” she concludes. “If I find something that’s going to make our older adults happy, I’ll do my best to make it happen.” ### About Piedmont Senior Resources: Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging is a private, nonprofit agency that focuses on advocating, advancing and achieving independence for persons 60 years and older in Buckingham, Cumberland, Amelia, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Charlotte and Prince Edward counties. This collaboration aims to address the critical issue of transportation access for older adults in rural areas, ensuring equitable healthcare opportunities for all. Transportation barriers have long been a significant challenge for older adults, particularly those residing in rural communities. The lack of reliable transportation options often leads to missed medical appointments, delayed treatments, and limited access to essential healthcare services. Recognizing this pressing need, PSR and PHD have united their efforts to bridge the transportation gap and improve the overall well-being of older adults in the Piedmont region. Dr. Maria Almond, Director of the Piedmont Health District, expressed her enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, “The availability of reliable, safe transportation is fundamental to health access, especially for our aging population. By collaborating with Piedmont Senior Resources, we can ensure that older adults in our community have the means to reach their medical appointments, receive necessary treatments, and maintain their overall health and well-being." Justine A. Young, CEO of Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging, echoed Dr. Almond's sentiments, emphasizing the significance of this collaboration. "We are thrilled to partner with the Piedmont Health District to enhance our Non-Emergency Medical Transportation program. This joint effort will enable us to expand our services and reach more older adults in need, ensuring they have equitable access to healthcare resources and can age with dignity in their own communities." The partnership between PSR and PHD will provide vital financial support to PSR's NEMT program, enabling more trips for more older adults. These enhancements will significantly improve transportation options for older adults, empowering them to maintain their independence, access necessary medical care, and engage in social activities that contribute to their overall well-being. PSR and PHD are committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by older adults in rural areas, where transportation resources are often limited. By working together, they aim to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system that ensures no older adult is left behind due to transportation barriers.
